The only wild cat rehabilitation facility in Zululand is located on Emdoneni Lodge and Game Farm, a private game reserve with sand forest vegetation, just outside of Hluhluwe.
Emdoneni Cat Rehabilitation Centre offers instructive visits twice a day, with interesting presentations by an experienced guide and afternoon feeding.
Wild cheetahs, servals, African wildcats, and lynx that have been orphaned or injured are rehabilitated and released back into their natural habitat wherever possible.
The initiative is funded by tour fees or a “adoption” program that allows visitors to donate to the center.
These monies are used to pay for veterinarian care, food, camp and fence maintenance, and labor salaries. It is intended that by introducing a donation-based system, each cat’s stay at the center will be improved.
The project’s goal is to maintain as few cats in captivity as possible. Appropriate animals are released back into the wild once their numbers have increased.
